The pale morning light was still weak; struggling to break through the layer of clouds on the horizon to greet a world still covered in a layer of winter frost. Taking a quick, stinging breath of the chilled morning air, Fai was quite glad to have picked up his new scarf when he'd been at the store the other day. He always walked to work and some times just his coat was not enough.
The school was just a few blocks away from his apartment, and he rather enjoyed the fresh air every day, since most of his time was spent indoors at the front of his classroom. This particular day, he found himself absentmindedly humming to himself as he avoided the yet unmelted patches of snow on the sidewalk.
Almost every day he was one of the first teachers to arrive. Like usual, the parking lot was practically empty when he stepped foot onto school grounds. This day was no exception, and the sound of his shoes made a delightful clicking sound as they echoed through the dim, empty hallways. The pale morning light was growing in intensity, shining through the windows and glistening off the freshly polished floors.
With a hopeful glance, he peered down the hallway where the physical education office was. But there was no light shining from beneath the door. For a fraction of a second, one might have caught a glimpse of a slight frown flicker across his face, but it was gone just as quickly as it appeared and he continued on his way to his own office. He had plenty of things to do to prepare for today's lesson to be bothered by the simple lack of lighting.
Until class began, he spent his morning scribbling notes on the blackboard and measuring out several powders and liquids that his students would be using in today's experiment and lesson. And his day would have gone on perfectly as planned, without any distractions had it not been for the students themselves.
He hadn't really noticed or had reason to be looking for such things at first, but he did find if rather odd that one of his best students from class 2-A was not participating as he usually did. In the beginning of class, he thought maybe Syaoran wasn't feeling well. Or perhaps he was just tired. But while the class we let loose to work on their assigned experiments, he noticed Syaoran keep stealing glances at his bookbag under his desk. His amber eyes would linger there a moment, and almost as soon as a pink tinge would spread across his entire face, he would quickly turn his attention back on his assignment while hiding his his face under his fringe of brown hair.
Curious, Fai tiptoed around the classroom, pretending to be checking everyone's work, and discovered the small corner of a glitery, red, foil box could be seen peeking out from inside Syaoran's overly used and heavily worn-out book bag.
Only then did Fai realize what day it was.
He couldn't believe that he had forgotten, and he stood there frozen in place and silently cursing himself for having done so. To his credit though, he had grown rather used to letting this day pass by just as any other. He had not had a reason to pay it any more attention than any of the other days of the year. Sometimes he would buy a little box of chocolate for himself if they were on sale at the supermarket. But other than the self-indulging treat, Valentines day was just as significant as Norwegian Indipendance Day to him - which was to say, not at all.
It was two hours until lunch break still, and his lesson plans were about the furthest thing from his mind. He wondered if Yuuko-san would let him borrow her car to make a quick run to the store.
He laughed quietly to himself as he paced around the room making sure no one had their flames too high; it was probably very silly of him to be worrying so much about it. He wasn't even sure he could really even bring himself to actually give someone anything and mean it. But he would feel a lot better if he had remembered his wanting to give something in the first place.
The rest of his classes from then until lunch time seemed to crawl by. He sent Himawari from class 3-B to Yuuko-san with a note asking to borrow the use of her car for the lunch period.
"Of course Fai-sensei!" Yuuko's note had responded; covered in hearts and flowers and smelling slightly of pipe smoke. She had even sent Himawari returning with a small set of silver keys.
The moment his final class of the morning was over, he was practically running to the parking lot; careful not to slip on any ice as he made his way towards Yuuko-san's car. He was sorry to be missing his lunch in the teacher's lounge today. It was one of the best parts of any day; he always looked forward to it even on day's he didn't want to be there.
There were isles full of brightly wrapped boxes; pinks, purples, reds, whites, and any combinations thereof all stuffed with various chocolates. Stuffed bears with cute notes stitched onto fluffy heart-shaped pillows. Candies shaped like roses. He was deeply concerned that none of these things seemed like anything the person he was buying them for would like.
On a bottom shelf, a small stuffed puppy looked up at him with garnet button eyes. He was attached to a tiny box of candies labeled "specially dark."
If that wasn't fitting, he wasn't sure what would be.
Thirty minutes for lunch was just not a very long period of time, when one had errands to run. He was barely in the building when it was time for his next class to start.
It was back to the front again of the class again, slightly out of breath from running down the hall. He sat his soon-to-be-given gift underneath his desk and began his lesson.
Three more classes to teach. All of them full of blushing boys, and girls who would huddle together and giggle. But his lesson for the day kept him rather busy, so he had very little time to ponder over the best way to sneak his own gift to someone.
There was a red ink pen in his office he would use to write a small note. He would stick it in a box and have one of his students run it over in his next class.
Yes. That would do.
While his class set to work, mixing their ingredients and holding vials over flames, he ducked back into his office to find what he would need.
Because you're weird and like this sort of thing.

That was all the note said. It sat there in the center of the desk on top of a small white box of chocolates wrapped in a satin red bow. And in that moment, Fai could not quite remember if he had ever been happier.
